“Citizens’ Voice Project Hosts Round-Table Discussion to Address Legislator-Constituent Disconnect Post-Elections

The Citizens’ Voice project held an engagement meeting to address the disconnect between legislators and constituents’ post-elections. The discussion involved 20 legislators, six civil society organizations (CSOs), eight constituents from four provinces, and staff from Parliament. This second meeting under the project was the first to include CSOs, legislators, and constituents in a round-table discussion to explore why MPs are often absent from their constituencies despite having time allocated in the Parliamentary calendar. Socio-economic hardships causing constituents to ask for cash handouts from their representatives were identified as a key issue. Solutions proposed included increasing awareness about the role of legislators and holding more engagement meetings. The Citizens’ Voice is a 24-month project by BBC Media Action, in partnership with the Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) and the National Assembly of Zambia, funded by the European Union.
